One Tree Books

Tim O'Kelly's thriving business in Petersfield is a model for independents in similar market towns. He set it up in the mid-1990s after working for MacMillan Publishing, and for the first few years it was just a bookshop. Tim's enthusiasm for books and personal approach completely won over locals, and the ethos is maintained by long-standing staff member, Hilary.
The shop's selling space has expanded backwards and upwards since its early years, and now includes a buzzing café, an area for live events, and the best greeting card offering in town. Valentine's New Yorker cards have been stock items from the start, and Tim says they show no sign of slowing up - "the opposite in fact". From the latest designs, his favourite is the one of the pig being treated by a doctor: "I'm afraid it's your ribs - they're delicious".
Grayshott Books, Surrey

Julie Stephens has been running Grayshott Books since early 2006. About half of the floor space in this busy Surrey shop is devoted to books and half to cards, stationery and gift wrap.
"The books and gifts complement each other very well," Julie says. "People come in here for one category and usually end up buying something from both". Julie has been stocking cards from Valentine for over two years. She keeps 24 of the bestselling cartoon cards on a spinner, and also stocks the Country Living cards. "People have got to know the New Yorker cards and have their personal favourites. If I run out of a design, they'll specifically ask when it's coming back into stock, so there's a lot of affection for the range."
